Our history

Stella Maris Preparatory School is a Roman Catholic educational institution that has always endeavoured to foster in its staff and students attitudes and values essential to the pursuit of excellence.

Stella Maris Preparatory School was established in February 1951 by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help of Jamaica. The property on which the school is situated was then known as Nakota, but was later changed to “Stella Maris”, a Latin term which means “Star of the Sea”.

The school started with an overflow of students from Holy Childhood Preparatory, its sister school. It was housed in a small garage that was converted into a classroom. The rapid growth of the school was in part due to the housing development that later took place in and around the area. As the school’s population grew, so did the physical structure and educational offerings.

 deliver quality education at the early childhood and primary levels;
 promote holistic development of students through Christocentric Franciscan values and
 an integrated national curriculum that prepares each child for life’s opportunities and challenges.

The track record of Stella Maris Prep in academics, sports and the arts places it among the top primary educational institutions in Jamaica.   

Admission

Stella Maris Preparatory is a private Catholic co-educational primary school, with nursery, Pre-kinder, Kindergarten and preparatory departments. The school accepts children between the ages of 2 years to 12 years of age.

General Information
A child must be 2 years old on or before September the first,the year the child is scheduled to start school. Admission for this age group is at the beginning of the school year. The school is under the direction and sole jurisdiction of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters, of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Jamaica. The administrative Staff is assissted by the Board of Govenors appointed by the F.M.S on the recommendation of the principal. The school is a non-profit organization.
